How to Add Subtasks in Notion

How to Add Subtasks in Notion

One of the most basic and useful features of Notion is the "Database", which allows us to create all kinds of lists. One such kind of list is a To-Do list.To-do lists can help you keep track of your tasks and goals. They make it easy to see what you need to do and when. Doing the tasks on the list and marking them done gives you a feeling of success and helps you stay motivated. In turn, making you more prone to complete your tasks. What happens when you have tasks that need more granular breakdown into sub-tasks? One way to go about this would be to create more to-do items in the list, but its hard to have them organized.A better way: Notion has recently added the ability to create sub-tasks. This is a game changer for those of us who need hyerarchichal organization for tasks. Here are the steps to create sub-tasks in Notion:

  1. Open you task database in list view

Simple Task DB

2. Go to settings (the ... button), then click on "Sub-items"

Settings -> Sub-items

3. Next, you will see two fields. One for the parent item, one for the child item (subtask). You can give then whichever name you want. By default they are "Sub-item" and "Parent item". Click on "Create"

Set Up Relations

4. Now, back in your database view, you should see a triangle to the left of each row. This indicates that this row (task) can have subtasks under it.

Subtasks Can Be Added By Expanding the Left Arrow

5. Add as many subtasks as needed
